Lesson 5 - Sorting 2-D Shapes

 

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Sorting 2-D Shapes, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Shape Investigator lets students compare and sort 2-D shapes.

To use Shape Investigator, drag and drop a shape into the play area. To rotate a shape, click on it. Shapes can be combined at the corners and snapped together. To change the colour of a shape, click a colour in the upper right palette and click on the shape in the play area. To move the picture, click the arrows on the red target icon to move up, down, right or left. Use the magnifying glasses at the bottom left to make the shapes larger or smaller. Use the red arrow to undo a move on the play area and the green arrow to redo the move. Drag any shape from the play area to delete it. Use the 'Clear' Button to start a new picture.

Shape Sorter prompts students sort and classify objects using a Venn diagram.

There are two ways to use Shape Sorter - Guess the Rule, or Make the Rule. Both ways students can use a single circle, two non-overlapping circles, or two overlapping circles. Click on either button at the left of the screen to choose which one to play.

To use Guess the Rule, the program creates a rule for students to try to figure out. Click and drag different colored shapes into the circle(s). Try to guess the rule based on which shapes and colors are accepted or rejected. Have students guess the rule from the pull-down menu and then click on the "Check Rule" button.

To use Make the Rule, have students make the rule for the circle(s) and then place the shapes in the appropriate location(s). Use the pull down menus to set the rule for each circle. Then click the "Set Rule" button to continue. Drag each of the shapes to their appropriate location in the Venn diagram. When the shapes are all in the correct locations, a message appears to indicate the game is finished.
